The Ryobi ES5500 is an interesting idea.

It connects to your smart hope and integrates, giving you the ability to detect studs in walls using your phone and this device. Nice idea, but does it work?

What does it do

the way ti works is the same as most stud finders (see how stud finders work for more) but it connects to your phone, and gives you a display on your screen of what it’s finding and how things are going. It’s a nice concept.

It detects studs up to 3-4 inches into drywall. 

How is it different

The Ryobi ES5500 is different to most stud finders because for one, it looks much better! It just looks slick and modern while at the same time it’s not too big or ‘in the way’.

What’s bad about it

It’s been said that it sometimes gives slightly inaccurate readings, and doesn’t always give a correct reading on the screen.

What’s good about it

Well, it looks great, the concept is good and most of the time it works fine!


Not and for the price, however we’d suggest going with something a little more complex and accurate, if you’re in need of a serious bit of kit.

If you’re thinking of buying the Zircon Multiscanner I520, maybe you’ll want to just read my review, just to get a better understanding of how it works.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good stud finder, but there are some things you’ll want to know.

Firstly, let’s talk about the features, and I’ll start with the benefits and basically the ‘good’ stuff.

The Good Stuff

The Zircon Multiscanner I520 is a very capablable electronic stud finder which has two stud scan modes.

It can find studs up to 1 and a half inches deep (about 38mm), and it has some exciting but useful features which make it stand out from the rest, and certainly make this better than a magnetic stud finder.

So, as I said it can scan studs at a pretty good depth, but here’s what’s probably more interesting for the Zircon Multiscanner I520 –

It can detect live ‘hot’ wires’ underneath the stud wall, and it alerts you to them.

It does this by using an ‘AC scanner’ which is testing for live current around the tip of the scanner. When it finds a currnent, it knows there’s a live wire underneath.

The Zircon Multiscanner I520 Onestep can even tell if the wire is ‘shielded’ or not. This means it can detect whether it will be dangerous to drive a nial into the stud wall. A ver important feature and it could very well save you injury!

Imagine you’re trying to find a stud in a drywall and you don’t know where the live wires are! This is where magnetic stud finders (and, even worse – The ‘testing with a nail’ approach) just aren’t up to the task. The future is in electronic stud finders, and this one is a great contender!

Autocorrecting mistakes that people make is another great feature of this stud finder. Yes, you read that right. It can detect the common mistakes that people make and adjust its results according to that. This makes it very useful for people who maybe have a shaky hand, or don’t like to hold the stud finder in one place for a long time.

The Zircon Multiscanner I520 Onestep has a 4 mode switch, bright LED screen to toggle through options and a wide range of features. It also has a ‘spotlight’ pointing system to locate the studs and an audio alert, so you know instantly when it’s found a stud. It automatically calibrates 10 times a second. Just think about how many times that is for a second (pun intended). It is very accurate.

Now, although this is a great stud finder, it wouldn’t be an honest review unless we mentioned the negatives as well. Let’s explore those!

The Bad Stuff:

The main negative thing about this stud finder is the battery and accuracy when it’s low on charge.

We’ve found that it tends to perform poorly when the battery is low, and this can mean it will give random results or slightly inaccurate ones. There is a simple way round this however, just make sure it’s always got fresh batteries and that when it starts to slack in performance, you replace or charge your batteries.

There isn’t a lot else to say in terms of negatives, so let’s sum this up.

How To Find Stud Without A Stud Finder

Finding a wall stud without a stud finder can seem difficult, but I assure you it’s easy when you know how.

I comes down to a few things, and I’ll go through them here. Basically, you want to find a way of establishing where the studs are behind the plaster.

There are a number of ways you could go about doing this. Let’s explore each one in detail –

1. The old fashioned method

You’re going to use a nail and a hammer. Drive the nail into the wall at various points, maybe every few inches until you strike a stud. It’s not a very elegant way of finding a stud without a stud finder, but it gets the job done. This is one way you could do it. Don’t worry, I’ll get to the better solutions in a second.

2. Once you’ve found one stud, measure to the next one

Generally, studs in walls are positioned about 16 inches away from each other. This of course varies slightly, but this is the normal distance. Measure from the stud you’ve found to the next one, and you’ll have less holes in the wall due to using the nail and hammer method.

3. Examine the baseboard

The baseboard is the board mounted on the studs, and generally speaking, things like lamps, photos or other things that hang from the wall are mounted on a stud. Use this to your advantage to find the studs without a stud finder.

4. Use a flashlight.

The plasterboard which has been mounted on the studs will have been nail for screwed directly into the studs themselves, so if you use a torch and carefully look at the plasterboard, you should be able to see slight bumps where the screws or nails poke out a tiny bit, or where the boards meet each other at the stud. This is a simple way to find studs without a stud finder.

5. Use a magnet and dental floss

This simple trick will help you to find studs without any sort of stud finder. You’re going to attach a small magnet to the end of a piece of dental floss. We’re using dental floss because it’s very thin and won’t offer much resistance. Swing the magnet along the wall until it latches on to a screw or nail behind the plasterboard.

This will be where the stud is. It helps to use a strong magnet, but even a fridge magnet or something similar should work for most walls, it really depends on the thickness of the board. Some thick boards need stronger magnets because of course there’s more ‘wall’ for the magnet to work through.

I’ve used a few stud finders over the years and this one is really one of the better magnetic stud finders on the market. I didn’t expect much from it when I got the CH Hanson 03040 Magnetic Stud Finder but it really does perform.

If I’d known about this stud finder, I could have saved lots of money by just using magnetic stud finders all the time! But then, the problem is that when you want to locate something with a little more precision, you kinda need an electronic one. This is great for just locating studs in drywalls for example, but don’t expect it to locate things like piping or electrical wires.

The magnets used in it are actually pretty strong, and I know what you’re probably thinking when deciding about buying a magnetic stud finder is ‘does it actually work’ well I can tell you it does.

What’s bad about the CH Hanson 03040 Magnetic Stud Finder?

To be honest, not a lot. If I had to say something, it’s the depth that you’re locating studs. If you’re going to try and use this on a thick piece of wood or something, then it’s not going to perform too well. You have to bear in mind that it’s only magnets after all, and it does have it’s limitations.

As you’d expect for a magnetic stud finder, the power is limited the thicker the material you’re working with. If you’re just using the CH Hanson 03040 Magnetic Stud Finder to locate studs in a normal plaster wall then you’re fine!
